Bowls

Mens Bowls

When you consider that we are a small, one-green club we have many members who have gone on to represent us at Port Curtis District, State and National competition levels. The men always play competitive bowls, but with great spirit and plenty of banter, both on and off the green. Our men play every Saturday at 13.00, although many are seen most days having a roll-up, to hone their skills.

The men’s club fully support our Club Championships which are hotly contested, and are keen for Pennants every year. They also get very involved in social bowls and, of course, our regular Saturday sessions.

Our division one teams have captured District flags in 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007,2019 and 2023. In 2019, the division one team brought home the Queensland Group 6 zone flag and went on to State play-offs at Tweed Heads where they finished up in a very creditable 5th place. Our division two teams won the Port Curtis District division two flags in 1995, 2011, 2012, 2019, 2020, 2022 & 2023.  These are great achievements for a little club.

Ladies Bowls

From 1984 to 2025 our ladies used to be a separate club. We are now one family and our ladies continue to support the club by helping to run our bar and volunteering to provide catering for events.

Our ladies have a long history of support for Lawn Bowls and many of them have been active on District Committees and have been President of the Port Curtis Ladies Bowling Association.

Our club has a long and proud history, with many of our own champions going on to win District Championships. In 2010 our Champion of Club Champions Fours team won the Zone title and represented us well at state level, as did our Club Pairs Champions in 2015. Our club has also performed well in 1st Division Pennants, winning the flags in 1990, 1991 and 2009.

The ladies usually run three carnivals in the bowling year. The Two Bowl Triples and Mudcrab Fours (which are both one day only) plus the Boyne Tannum Invitational Fours for Masters, which is held over two days. The Masters began as a bicentennial event back in 1988 and it recently celebrated its 30th anniversary. This is the only Masters event in our Zone. It was originally just for winners of Championship Fours, but has been opened up over the years to winners of all Championship events.

Our playing day (Uniform Day) is every Friday Morning, with names in by 09.00 for morning tea and play beginning at 09.30. Any BA affiliated player is more than welcome to join us for a game.  We also offer encouragement to new bowlers who are just starting out.

Social Bowls

At BITS all of our bowls sessions are very sociable occasions. Also, aside from our slightly more formal Friday / Saturday sessions, we have a Tuesday afternoon mixed mufti and the sometimes a Thursday afternoon mixed game too, depending on demand. All of these sessions are really good fun and suitable for players of every ability. If you are a new bowler and want to have a gentle introduction to the game, these social bowls days are a really good place to start. During the warmer weeks of summer, we move these sessions to twilight, switch on the floodlights and have an evening under the stars.

Please remember, if you want to have a game of barefoot bowls with a few mates, we are happy to help you out. Please contact our club for details.

Travelling Bowlers

Our Travelling Bowlers, or “Fishos” as they are probably better known, get together every other Sunday throughout the bowling year. A BBQ breakfast is served at 8.00, followed by a pretty lively game of lawn with plenty of chat and comradeship. If you have ever thought that bowls was a slightly dull and boring game, a Sunday with this lot will change your mind. Give it a try.

Our Fishos, all of whom are members of BITS, also organise away weekend trips to other clubs near and far. They sort out the itinerary and fix up the accommodation and transport for members who are on the trip. These events are like mini-tours and are really not to be missed.
